The Indian mackerel has a moderately deep body, with a head longer than its depth, and partially concealed maxilla. Featuring thin dark longitudinal bands, golden on fresh specimens, and a distinctive black spot near the pectoral fin, it reaches a maximum length of 35 cm, typically averaging around 25 cm. The dorsal fins display yellowish color with black tips, while the caudal and pectoral fins are yellowish, and other fins appear dusky.
