The ilish, also known as hilsa or hilsa herring, is a highly prized fish related to herring, prominent in the Indian subcontinent and designated as the national fish of Bangladesh and the state fish of West Bengal. Originating mainly from the Padma River in Bangladesh, it accounts for 86% of the world’s ilish supply as of 2021, contributing significantly to the country’s fish production (12%) and GDP (1.15%). Recognized as a product of Bangladesh, ilish holds geographical indication status, involving around 450,000 people directly and several million indirectly in its catching and trade.
