Chub mackerel, prevalent in the Indo-Pacific, is absent from the Indian Ocean, except for a small South African range. In the Atlantic, it is replaced by the closely related Atlantic chub mackerel. Widely distributed in the northwestern, southeastern, and northeastern Pacific, they inhabit waters between 50 and 72 °F (10 to 22 °C), schooling with other pelagic species. Young mackerel reside near sandy beaches or kelp beds, while adults are found in deeper waters up to 1000 feet (300 m) deep.
